ASSEMBLY: A Co-created Art and Social Practice Conference. Downtown Portland, OR
Created and choreographed in collaboration with Shoshana Gugenheim
Informed by the practices of Rebecca Solnit and Ernesto Pujol, artist Shoshana Gugenhiem and I choreographed a walk in downtown Portland. Thirty participants were split into pairs and asked to decide to route to walk, in silence and in synchronized step together, from Portland’s Steel Bridge to the Multnomah County Central Library. Once they began walking their only communication was through movement as they were instructed not to speak. Although partners were spread out throughout the city, each pair taking unique routes, this was a collective walk. Participants were encouraged to observe their physical experience moving through public space all while remaining mindful of their body in proximity to their partners and to the collective as a whole. During this embodied civic engagement project we walked 1.5 miles. All ages and abilities were invited to participate.
